PROSA is a novel collaborative effort between high-energy physicists in experiment and theory, from DESY, German universities, and international partners, in order to advance the interpretation of proton collision data from the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and elsewhere.

Our goal is significant improvement in the precision of parameters of the Standard Model and thus in its predictive power in order to facilitate the advanced interpretation of LHC results. This goal will be achieved in the course of our project via shared analysis tools which incorporate theory calculations and data in a form suitable for use by all partners. This is a novel way of establishing experimental-theory collaboration and includes the development and immediate application of new calculations and theory tools, and the implementation of advanced analysis strategies. The combined results of this effort will be of benefit to a wide range of physics analyses and will substantially advance the physics program at the LHC.

Collaboration Rules

  • Membership:

- the PROSA Collaboration consists of all its members;

- a member should identify him/herself with the scientific goals of PROSA and accept working in a multi-experiment and multi-theory group environment;

- the collaboration welcomes new members who bring in and realize new ideas, following the goals of PROSA, or take over a task addressed in PROSA in work packages (i)-(iv);

- membership does not depend on the stage of the member's academic career;

- active contributions to PROSA are the work done in work packages (i)-(iv) + educational activity (tool tutorials, help in common analyses and calculations), supervision of less experienced members, applications for funding, and help for the career development of non-staff members. All these activities are treated on the same footing;

- the achievements of each member within PROSA are traceable for the whole collaboration; each member takes responsibility for his/her own contribution;

- members not reporting within 6 months after initial contact will be contacted to document their progress within the collaboration;

- all members have the right and possibility to shape the collaborative structure, bring up ideas for changes and participate in the discussion on any matter of the collaboration;

- proposals for new members are sent to the executive committee and convenors, and are voted on by each member of the whole collaboration.


  • Interactions:

- proposals are discussed by the whole collaboration and, if necessary, decided on by vote;

- are realized as needed in regular global meetings, dedicated meetings for particular work packages (see below), and via common web pages, e.g. wiki-like, which can be separated into public as well as internal pages.


  • Structure:

- the collaboration has a minimal structure of 4 working groups. The main activities concentrated in the Working Group "Integrated Physics Analysis", the conveners of this group have the responsibility to encourage co-operation between members from different experimental or theory groups; they identify uncovered topics, follow the progress in the work package, are aware of possible personnel problems and report to the collaboration.

- working group meetings have a form of common working days, planned by the conveners, progress or problems should be briefly reported;

- conveners are elected by the whole collaboration upon a simple majority for a period of 2 years, mandate is renewable;

- the executive committee represents the collaboration to the outside; the committee is elected by the whole collaboration; the term of office is two years and renewable.


  • Elections:

- the election of the executive committee members and the conveners requires a simple majority - changes of the collaboration rules require a two-thirds majority - for the time being the elections are organized for simplicity either as e-mail or web-based vote; the elections have to be set up and evaluated by at least two persons who are NOT participating as candidates in the election

  • Funding applications:

- PROSA participants can use the letter of intent to apply for external funding in their countries; - applications for funding for PROSA activities should be notified to the collaboration and the results of the application should be traceable


  • Publication Rules:

- results obtained in the work packages (i), (ii), (iii) are published by respective experiments, tool groups and theory groups, produced these results; - results obtained in the work package (iv) are published by the PROSA collaboration. The author list is decided by option in/out by each member. The publication guidelines are agreed upon by the collaboration and are listed in the Paper Drafts page (internal).
